Creating an account and logging in
What’s the difference between signing up and logging in?
Learners should sign up to Siyavula if they are signing up for the first time (i.e. they have never created an account on Siyavula before). If they have created an account before, the learner should simply log in.
If a learner tries to sign up with details they’ve used before, they will receive the following message: It looks like you’ve already got an account, and includes a link to the login page. They should then log in with their previous details.
Please encourage your learners NOT to create another account. It becomes very confusing for learners and teachers, and may lead to learners missing assignments or practice not reflecting on teacher dashboards. Rather assist them or encourage them to reset their password for the account that has already been created (see 2 below).
Passwords and login details
My learners have forgotten their passwords. How can I help them?
There are two ways to reset passwords:
Learners can reset their own passwords when they log in to Siyavula. If they’ve forgotten their passwords, they just need to click on the Forgot your password link on the login page, and follow the instructions. They will need to have access to either the email address or phone number linked to the account to retrieve the password reset.
If your learners have already linked themselves to your class, you can reset their passwords by going to that class on your Teacher Dashboard:
- Click on Overview, and scroll down to the list of learners.
- Tick the box next to the learner/s names who need their passwords changed.
- Click on the Set password button at the top of the list.
- Type in a new password for the learner/s.
Your learner can now use their Siyavula ID and the password you created for them to log in.
Where can I see my learner's login details?
From the list of classes on your Teacher Dashboard, click on Overview, and scroll down to your list of learners. If you click on Profile, you will see some of the details your learner used when setting up their accounts. For data privacy reasons, we do not include complete email addresses or mobile phone numbers. However, we do give each learner a unique alpha-numeric Siyavula ID. This Siyavula ID can be used as an alternative to their username when they log in.
Learner Activity not showing
My learner has been practising. Why is their practice not reflecting on my teacher dashboard?
If your learner has been practising, but you’re not seeing what they’ve done on your teacher dashboard, it’s likely that they’ve either:
- Not put in the access code to link themselves to your class; or
- Created a duplicate account, and are practising on an account that is NOT linked to your class.
This is one of the reasons we encourage learners not to create duplicate accounts if they forget their login details.
To make sure learners are using the account that is linked to your class, go to the class on your Teacher Dashboard, click on Overview, and scroll down to the list of learners. If you click on a learner’s Profile, you can give the learner the details they logged in with. This is the account that the learner should be using.
Why has my learner not received their assignment?
Again, this is probably because the learner has created a duplicate account or not put in the class access code. The assignment is only sent to learners who are linked to your class. If the learner has simply created another account, which is not linked to your class, they will not receive the assignment.
Once the correct account is linked to your class, they should see the assignment in their Siyavula inbox.
How can I remove a learner from my class?
Go to the class on your Teacher Dashboard, click on Overview, and scroll down to the list of learners. Tick the box next to the learner/s you wish to remove from the class, and click on the Unlink learner/s button at the top of the list.
Please can you move my learner to another class?
You can move learners to another class at your school. Simply go to the class on your Teacher Dashboard, click on Overview, and scroll down to the list of learners. Tick the box next to the learner/s you wish to transfer to another class, and click on the Transfer button at the top of the list. You will then see a dropdown menu with the other classes at your school. Simply choose the class you wish to move your learner to, and click Next and then Confirm.
